Google Zeitgeist 2012 – What We Were Searching This Year
Google Zeitgeist is probably my favourite Google announcement each year (yes, I have a favourite Google announcement). When the Zeitgeist 2012 top search list was released yesterday, I was straight over there. Yes, I am that sad. Anyway, here’s the summary video:
You can get the full list of UK 2012 search trends here, but let’s have a look at some of them here.
Note: There’s a combination of ‘trending’ and ‘most searched’ top 10s here. Google defines the 2 as:
Search queries with the highest amount of traffic over a sustained period in 2012 as compared to 2011.
Search queries with the largest volume of searches.
Trending Sports Searches in the UK in 2012
In what was undoubtedly one of the biggest sporting years in history, with the Euros and, of course, the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympic games, the 10 most searched sports in the UK were as above.
For any of you, like me, who had no idea what on Earth ‘murderball’ is, it’s wheelchair rugby. You learn something new every single day!
Most Popular Team GB Olympian Searches in the UK – 2012
Staying on the theme of sports, Google also published the top searches for ‘in country Olympians.’
Now, I reckon Andy Murray’s got an unfair advantage here, having also competed at Wimbledon. So I’m taking him out of the equation and declaring Tom Daley the most popular team GB Olympian! Very little by way of surprises here.
Trending ‘What Is?’ Searches in the UK – 2012
Ah, the age old question tops the list. Surprised not to see ‘what is the meaning of life?’
The Google suggested searches doesn’t reflect this, mind. It currently suggests, when you start typing ‘what is,’ that you probably want to ask ‘What is my IP?’
Most Popular TV Show Searches in the UK – 2012
Three things about this disturb me.
1. Big Brother beat the X Factor
2. Eastenders beat Corrie!
3. Geordie Shore made the top 10!
