App Obsession of the Week: Cycle Network
I’ve recently acquired a bike on a Cycle to Work scheme and have taken up spending as much time each week as humanly possible on my shiny new Specialized mountain bike. So of course, the logical thing to do in the smartphone era is to check out apps that will help you plan routes, track routes etc. I have a couple of decent paid apps that are great for tracking where you are and measuring the distance you go etc, but in terms of actually planning a cycle route, there’s nothing better I have found than the official Sustrans Complete National Cycle Network app.
The app, released by Sustrans, shows all of the UK’s national cycle routes and denotes clearly whether they’re traffic free, busy roads etc. It also shows certain facilities nearby like bike shops (always handy for those unexpected mechanical mishaps).
It does GPS functionality as well, to track your ride and allow you to measure your distance etc – though that element isn’t the main strength of the app I don’t believe.
Anyway, the app is completely free and a must have for any UK cyclists. Get it from here.
