Google Plus Vanity URLs Arrive!
At last! Google has conceded and we’re getting vanity URLs in Google Plus! Hallelujah! The announcement made on Google Plus earlier states:
Your Google+ profile is a place for you to share your passions with the millions of people who come to Google each day. Whether you’re a clothing brand showing off your latest fashions (google.com/+hugoboss), an athlete talking about the game (google.com/+davidbeckham), or an actor recalling a favorite role (google.com/+hughjackman), your Google+ profile helps you connect with the people who share your interests. Today we’re introducing custom URLs to make it even easier for people to find your profile on Google+.
What’s interesting is that the URLs are to take the format google.com/+yourname, rather than plus.google.com/yourname.
It really is well overdue. Maybe Big G finally realised that nobody was going to put a URL with a ton of random numbers on a flyer or a billboard… or anywhere for that matter. Cumbersome, number heavy, meaningless URLs just aren’t memorable and therefore aren’t shareable. So this is an awesome, awesome move.
For those of us who had previously resorted to 3rd party URL shorteners such as gplus.to, this will make life easier. Though I can’t imagine gplus.to are over the moon about it!
Anyway, thank you Google Plus, peeps. Better late than never.
